This article is a continuation of How To Advertise Your Website with PPC – Part 1. In that article, I just explained exactly what Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is and why you might want to try it.
This article will explain how to sign up with Google Adwords. It’s worth mentioning that you can do PPC on a varitey of search enginges (Yahoo, MSN, 7Search, etc. – there are hundreds more) and the basic principles apply. But Google is a good place to start because it gets the most traffic and it’s very inexpensive to get started ($5.00) compared to some of the others.
For a more visual idea of how to go about this. . .go to my PPC tutorials on YouTube.
So, how do you get started with Google Adwords? It only takes $5.00 and a couple of minutes:
1. First go to www.Adwords.Google.com and click on START NOW.
2. Choose the option that best fits you. If you already have a google account that you use for other services, click on the first option. If you are completely new to all of this, click on the second option.
3. Enter in your email and a password for your account and fill in the security code. If you don’t get the security code the first time, don’t worry. . .it will allow you to re-do it until you get it right.
4. Enter in your time zone. Select the currency that you use. Hit continue.
5. Google will send you an email to the address that you gave them and you will need to open it and click on the link that they provide you in order to activate your account.
6. Once you’ve verified your address, you will be taken to a screen where you click continue.
7. Here is where you create your first campaign. Don’t worry to much about this first ad because creating this ad is just one of the steps you need to go through in order to get your account going and you don’t want to spend to much time with it. In fact, after you create this one, I would suggest that you “pause” it until we get into the lessons about how to write an effective ad.
8. Create a new campaign. Name your campaign with the general subject you will be advertising. Within each campaign, you will have several more specific subjects. So, for example, one of my campaigns is called MLM. All of my ads in this campaign target a specific keyword related to MLM (MLM tips, New MLM, Green MLM, etc).
9. Choose a geographical region that you want to target. You can leave the US/Canada bundle or you can add other countries. Choose your language.
10. Choose manual bidding and put in an amount you want to spend per day. Choose a low amount right now. In the next article, I will show you how you can get a good number of clicks for very little money. I recommend putting $3.00 to $5.00 per day for now. Hit save and continue.
11. Create your (dummie) ad. Write a headline and text to fit what you are advertising. Again, this is just a “fake” ad that we are creating so you can go in later and change or delete it. I will be showing you EXACTLY how to do your ads in the next article. For now, just put in some words that fit. Put in a valid Display URL (this is what people will see in your ad) and then a valid destination URL. I will go into more detail about these in the next article – there is some important info that you need to know before entering these URLs.
12. The keyword box. This requires a lot of information. For now, choose any keyword that is relevant to your business. Just choose one. I will show you how to find effective and inexpensive keywords in the next article.
13. Bid on your keyword. Put in 5 cents (at the most) for now. I will go into detail about this in a future article.
14 Save and continue to billing.
15. Select your billing territory and how you want to pay. I suggest you choose the post-pay billing option. Continue.
16. Yes, I agree. Continue. Enter in your card info and continue. Save and activate.
17. Go back to your first ad and pause it for now. Go back and click on the ad that you have just created. You will see it at the top of the page and you will see that it has a little green dot which says “enabled” next to it. Mover your mouse over that area and you will see a drop-down box. Here you can click “pause” in order to pause this dummie ad. The next article will show you how to create GOOD ads that will get you inexpensive clicks.
